Bristol-Myers Melanoma Drug Effective in Prolonging Survival
Bristol-Myers Squibb Co.'s drug ipilimumab is the first drug for melanoma that has shown prolonged survival. Melanoma is the deadliest for of skin cancer. In the United States there were around 68,720 new cases of melanoma last year. More than 50,000 people worldwide each year die each year due to melanoma. Ipilimumab helps the immune system fight tumors, and the Food and Drug Administration is set to review the product. Doctors expect that ipilimumab could be available by the end of the year.
